Before I fully understood what was happening, Scarlet had Lyla by the throat, lifted high up in the air. It seemed to be her go-to move when livid. By the time I caught up with the reason for her anger, she was in full-blown accusation mode.

“This is the time when the bullshit stops and the truth starts, Lyla. Nod if you understand,” Scarlet said calmly, her voice carrying a note of indifference that she clearly didn't feel. Lyla struggled against Scarlet's hold, but her efforts were futile, even when the golden flecks in her eyes started to glow. Her wolf was no match for the RB, and she knew it. “I don't enjoy being lied to. I suggest you not try it again.”

I don't think she's lying.

“Ruby, now is not the time for your dime-store analysis of the situation. Lyla is just about to tell me everything I want to know.”

She already did, I argued. I think I know what's going on.

“So do I,” Scarlet drawled, letting her anger seep into her tone. “When did you really get that scar, Lyla? You must have acquired it before you Changed. I'm curious. Enlighten me.”

Lyla garbled a bit while Scarlet continued to hold her in the air, unwavering.

She can't answer you if you choke her to death.

“Yes, pity that.” Suddenly, Scarlet released her, and Lyla crashed to the floor in a heap, gasping for breath. Scarlet crouched down beside her, her face lingering near Lyla's. “Now, you were just about to tell me something?”

“I'm not...lying,” Lyla wheezed. It clearly wasn't the answer Scarlet wanted. She hurled Lyla toward the wall, where her body crashed into the plaster and slumped to the ground yet again.

“I cannot be played like your long-lost childhood crush, Lyla. Your boobs don't impress me any more than your sob story. I will tear you limb from limb until you tell me what I want to know. Don't underestimate me. Only the soon-to-be-deceased underestimate me.”

Scarlet, something about this is all wrong. Your threats only support that argument. Lyla doesn't want to die, and I highly doubt she thinks you're bluffing.

“Your point, Ruby?”

My point is, if she's not lying and you kill her, we'll never make sense of this mess.

She sat back on her heels for a moment, contemplating my observation.

“Go on...”

The entire basis for your suspicion is that she has a scar, right?

“Yes. Because, as I said, it's impossible for werewolves to scar.”

Not really, I said, thinking of the faint scar that ran up my abdomen, courtesy of a sociopathic alpha werewolf named Gregory. I had scarred just fine, and I was a werewolf. Kind of. Partially. When I reminded my canine half of that fact, she growled in disapproval.

“The rules don't always apply to us,” she said, leaning into Lyla again.

Right. Because I'm part fey.

“Not following you. Patience running thin.”

My point is that Gavin said there was something about the Rev’s energy that read fey to him whenever he was around. That he was able to follow his energy trail for miles because of it.
